E-invoicing means that an invoice is created, sent, received and processed as a structured electronic message. In the Dutch market, UBL, Peppol and accounting software often appear together, but they are separate concepts.
Practical Dutch-market context
For Dutch SMEs, accountants and finance teams, e-invoicing can reduce manual typing. For foreign suppliers, it can also reduce friction when Dutch customers expect UBL files or electronic invoice workflows.
The practical difference is between a readable document and a processable document. A PDF may look neat, but accounting software still has to recognize its content. A UBL file already contains structured data, making checks, booking and archiving faster.
